The Lantern House

Union Dale, Pennsylvania

The Lantern House site is located upon a densely treed hilltop that runs along the shore of the Lackawanna River in Union Dale, PA. The overall design concept for the house was inspired by the idea of a lantern providing a glimpse of light that could be seen through the densely packed forest. The house is placed so that as one approaches the site, they can only get a slight view of the surreal nature experience beyond.  Its unique cantilever design was used to create a one-of-a-kind unobstructed view of the river from the heart of the home. The materials were selected based on the natural materials that could be found on the site and in the surrounding area, which allowed the structure to seem as if it was emerging from the earth and becoming part of the natural landscape.
